Building Science Principles:
What is the BPI Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate?

The BSP Certificate is an entry-level credential that demonstrates your understanding of the basic principles of building science, such as how heat, air, and moisture interact in a home. It’s perfect for those new to the industry or anyone working alongside energy efficiency professionals.

Is the BSP a certification?

No, the BSP is a certificate of knowledge, not a professional certification. It does not require recertification or continuing education, and it’s designed as a first step toward more advanced BPI certifications.

Do I need to take a course before the BSP exam?

Although it’s not required, you can greatly improve your chances of passing the exam by taking our course.

How is the BSP Certificate exam administered?

The exam is online, non-proctored, and open book. You can take it anytime, anywhere with an internet connection. It consists of multiple-choice questions.

What’s the passing score for the BSP exam?

You need to score at least 70% to pass the exam.

Is the BSP required for other BPI certifications?

Yes, the BSP is a prerequisite for certain BPI certifications, including the Building Analyst Technician (BA-T). It’s a great way to build foundational knowledge before moving on to hands-on or field-based certifications.

Will I receive a certificate after passing the exam?

Yes! Once you pass, you’ll receive an official BPI Building Science Principles Certificate of Knowledge, which you can download and print.

What should I do after earning my BSP certificate?

If you're looking to continue in the field, consider enrolling in the BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) training next. The BSP gives you a solid foundation to move forward with more hands-on, field-based certifications.

Building Analyst Technician (BA-T)
What is the BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) certification?

The BA-T certification demonstrates your ability to perform hands-on diagnostic testing on homes, including blower door and combustion safety testing. It’s the field-based half of the updated BPI Building Analyst pathway.

What’s the difference between BA-T and BA-P (Building Analyst Professional)?

The BA-T focuses on field testing and data collection. The BA-P (Professional) focuses on analysis, modeling, and making recommendations. Both are needed to replace the legacy BPI Building Analyst certification.

Is the BSP Certificate required before I take the BA-T?

Yes, the BPI Building Science Principles (BSP) certificate is a required prerequisite before you can earn your BA-T certification.

What are the prerequisites for the BA-T certification?

BSP Certificate of Knowledge. Completion of a BA-T training course is highly recommended but not required. Ability to perform field diagnostics using tools like a blower door and combustion analyzer.

What does the BA-T exam include?

It’s a field exam, not a written test. You’ll be required to demonstrate your ability to perform tasks such as:

  • Setting up and using a blower door
  • Measuring airflow and pressures
  • Performing combustion safety testing
  • Documenting findings accurately
How is the field exam administered?

The exam must be proctored by a BPI-approved proctor at an approved test location or in the field with proper equipment. Remote field exams are possible under specific guidelines.

Do I need my own equipment to take the BA-T field exam?

Not necessarily. Some training centers provide the equipment during the exam. If testing remotely, you may need access to a blower door, manometer, combustion analyzer, and other diagnostic tools. Contact us to further discuss your options!

How long is the BA-T certification valid?

It is valid for 3 years. You’ll need to submit field hours and meet BPI’s renewal requirements to maintain your certification.

Will my BA-T certification be reported to BPI?

Yes, once you pass the field exam, your results are submitted directly to BPI, and they will issue your certification upon verification.

What’s the next step after BA-T?

Once you’re certified as a BA-T, you can move on to earn the BA-P (Building Analyst Professional) certification to complete the full BPI Building Analyst pathway.

What equipment do I need to prepare for the Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) exam?

Please prepare the following prior to your field exam:

  • Blower door & accessories
  • Manometer
  • Pressure pan
  • TEC Exhaust Fan Flow Meter
  • Smoke pen
  • Combustion Analyzer of CO Analyzer
  • Combustible Gas Leak Detector
  • Personal CO meter
  • Necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Building Analyst Professional (BA-P)
What is the BPI Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) certification?

The BA-P certification demonstrates advanced knowledge in building science, energy modeling, and work scope development. It’s the analytical half of the updated Building Analyst career path, focused on interpreting diagnostic data and making recommendations to improve home performance.

How is the BA-P different from the BA-T?

The BA-T focuses on collecting data through field testing (blower door, combustion safety, etc.), while the BA-P focuses on analyzing that data to develop energy efficiency recommendations.

To be recognized as a full Building Analyst under BPI’s new scheme, you need both certifications.

What are the prerequisites for taking the BA-P exam?
  • You must already be certified as a BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T).
  • A training course is highly recommended to prepare for the exam, but not required.
  • A strong understanding of building science, energy modeling, and retrofit strategies is essential.
Is the BSP Certificate required before earning the BA-P?

Yes, the BSP Certificate is required as a foundation before progressing to BA-T and then BA-P.

What’s included in the BA-P exam?

The BA-P is a written (online) exam, consisting of multiple-choice questions on topics such as:

  • Building science principles
  • Interpreting diagnostic data
  • Developing scopes of work
  • Health and safety
  • Energy modeling
How is the BA-P exam administered?

It’s an online, proctored exam that you can take from home, provided you have a webcam and a quiet, secure testing environment.

How long is the BA-P certification valid?

The BA-P certification is valid for 3 years. To renew, you’ll need to meet continuing education (CEU) requirements, document field hours, and submit the renewal application and fee to BPI.

Will you report my exam results directly to BPI?

Yes, once you pass the exam, we’ll report your results directly to BPI. They’ll then issue your certification and list you in their certified professional database.

What should I do after earning the BA-P?

If you already hold the BA-T, earning your BA-P means you’re now a fully certified BPI Building Analyst under the new certification structure. You may also consider pursuing other BPI certifications, such as Energy Auditor (EA) or Quality Control Inspector (QCI), depending on your career goals.

Can I take the BA-P exam if I haven’t taken any formal training?

Yes, but we highly recommend taking a course to ensure you’re prepared. The exam is challenging and assumes a strong understanding of both theory and real-world applications.

BPI Infiltration and Duct Leakage (IDL)
What is the BPI IDL certification?

The IDL Certification qualifies contractors to perform blower door and duct leakage tests required by IECC codes for new homes and remodels. It’s a simple, affordable way to expand your skills and services.

Does this course qualify me to perform blower door and duct leakage testing?

Yes! Upon passing the BPI IDL field exam, you’ll be certified to perform both blower door and duct leakage tests on new homes, as required by IECC 2009 and 2012 codes.

If I take the course online, how do I take the field exam?

The field exam is conducted at your preferred location, as long as it meets BPI’s testing requirements. A proctor will oversee the exam remotely, and we provide a checklist and training video to help you prepare.

How long after I take the field exam will I receive my certification?

Once you pass the exam, your results are submitted to BPI. You’ll typically receive your certification within 3–5 business days, directly from BPI.
