Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve written about why a home energy auditor would want to get a BPI certification, and how to become bpi certified. In this post, we’ll get a little more specific about what you can expect in the BPI Building Analyst Course.

The BPI Building Analyst Course

The BPI course will take you through all of their specific building evaluation standards as they differ somewhat from those of RESNET. The course will also guide you through the procedures that a BPI Building Analyst has to perform including heat loss and savings calculations, writing the appropriate reports, how to detail retrofit requirements, and other home energy audit procedures.
The course consists of a 6 our online learning module that teaches the theory portion, a 90 minutes Energy Audit Training video, and a field training portion that will give you hands on experience performing the tasks of an energy auditor.
Also as a part of the course, you will receive a course study guide, the energy audit training video mentioned above, a technical resources guide, and a data collection form. It is also recommended that you purchase the textbook “Residential Energy” by Krigger and Dorsi to aid your studies for the BPI exam.
The RESNET Level 2 course also has a field training portion, so if you would like to take these 2 courses simultaneously, you would only have to complete the field training once to count towards both certifications. Yesterday I wrote a post that told your how to get RESNET certified and become a home energy auditor. While it is absolutely necessary to get certified by an accredited home energy auditing organization, RESNET certification is not the only path to become a home energy audit professional.

Get BPI Certified

As I posted last week, the BPI (Building Performance Institute) is another internationally recognized organization that provides home energy auditor certification. For those who have not read the other post, the main difference between the two lies in the various entities that recognize the certification.

For example, most government organizations require a home energy auditor to have a RESNET certification in order to perform audits that qualify for tax credits and other incentives. On the other hand, many utility companies across the nation require energy audits to be performed by a home energy auditor who has a BPI certification for the homeowner to qualify for certain incentives.

For this reason, many home energy auditors are choosing to pursue both RESNET and BPI Certifications.

To get BPI certified, you must first pass the RESNET Level 1 and RESNET Level 2 certification exams. Once you have passed these exams, you can enroll in a BPI Building Analyst Training Course which consists of an additional 6 hour online course and a 90 minute video that works in conjunction with the field training you had to complete for the RESNET Level 2 certification.
